Installation Instructions
(Windows) You can install all of your LabVIEW products—including the VI Analyzer Toolkit—using the LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs. You can find installation instructions for the VI Analyzer Toolkit along with activation instructions in the following locations:
LabVIEW Release Notes, which are available in your LabVIEW software kit.
LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs Readme, which is available on the top-level of LabVIEW Platform DVD 1.
To request additional LabVIEW 2010 Platform DVDs, refer to the National Instruments Web site.
Note: If you purchased this product with an NI Software Suite or NI Product Bundle, use the installation media that shipped with your purchase to install this product.
(Mac OS X) Complete the following steps to install the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit for Mac OS X.
Note: Some virus detection programs interfere with the installer. Disable any automatic virus detection programs before you install. After installation, check your computer for viruses and enable any virus detection programs you disabled.
Insert and browse to the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit installation CD and open LabVIEW2010VIAnalyzer.mpkg located under the LabVIEW_2010\Mac OS X directory.
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.
Complete the following steps to uninstall the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit for Mac OS X.
During installation, the VI_Analyzer_2010_Uninstall.sh uninstallation script is created in the same directory as your version of LabVIEW.
Drag the uninstall script to the prompt in a Terminal Window. Press Return and follow the instructions provided by the script.
After uninstalling the VI Analyzer Toolkit, you must manually delete the uninstallation script.
(Linux) Complete the following steps to install the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit for Linux.
Log into the system as root.
Insert the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit installation CD. Use mount /mnt/cdrom to mount the CD. On some systems, the CD mounts automatically.
To change the current directory to the mounted CD, enter the following command:
cd /mnt/cdrom
To run the installation script, enter the following command:
./INSTALL
If you encounter the following message: bad interpreter: Permission denied, the CD might not have mounted with executable permissions. To work around this, enter the following command:
/bin/sh ./INSTALL
Using the VI Analyzer Toolkit
After you install the VI Analyzer Toolkit, select Tools»VI Analyzer»Analyze VIs to run the VI Analyzer. You also can use the VI Analyzer VIs located on the Functions palette. Refer to the LabVIEW Help and the LabVIEW VI Analyzer Toolkit User Guide for more information about using the VI Analyzer Toolkit.
New Features
The LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer Toolkit introduces the following enhancements and changes.
Designing Custom VI Analyzer Tests
You can use the VI Analyzer Test Creator wizard to create custom VI Analyzer tests that check VIs interactively for style, efficiency, and other aspects of LabVIEW programming. Select Tools»VI Analyzer»Create New Test to display the VI Analyzer Test Creator wizard, where you can generate template files for a custom test. After you generate the files, you must modify each file to design the custom test.
Refer to the Fundamentals»Application Development and Design Guidelines»How-To»Using the VI Analyzer Toolkit»Designing a Custom VI Analyzer Test topic on the Contents tab in the LabVIEW Help for more information about creating a custom test.
New VI Analyzer Toolkit Tests
The following tests were added to the VI Analyzer Toolkit 2010:
Block Diagram > Performance
Inlinable VIs—Detects VIs that can be inlined, but that are not configured for inlining currently. Some VIs might show improved performance when inlined into their calling VIs.
Parallelizable Loops—Detects For Loops that can be parallelized safely. This test also detects For Loops that have already been parallelized but that contain non-reentrant subVIs, which prohibit parallel execution.
Prepend Scalar With Build Array—Checks whether the VI uses the Build Array function to prepend an array with a scalar.
Redundant Boolean Operations—Checks for And, Or, Not, Not And, and Not Or functions with constants wired to one or more of their inputs. In this situation, the Boolean function is not necessary, and you can remove it.
Value Property Usage—Checks for the use of the Value property to update the values of front panel controls and indicators. In most cases, a local variable updates front panel object values much faster than the Value property.
Block Diagram > Style
Tunnel Position—Checks whether all input tunnels are on the left side of a structure and all output tunnels are on the right side. Note that this test ignores Flat Sequence structures.
Block Diagram > Warnings
Type Casting References—Detects when the VI contains a Type Cast function used to cast one reference type into another reference type. This situation might lead to instabilities or crashes with certain reference data types.
Front Panel > User Interface
Scalar Chart Updates—Checks for waveform charts that receive individual updates. You can minimize the number of times the front panel updates by wiring array data to the chart terminal rather than scalar data.
Synchronous Display—Checks for controls and indicators with the Synchronous Display shortcut menu item enabled. Enabling Synchronous Display causes the control or indicator to redraw every time LabVIEW updates the value of the object. Most applications do not require such rapid updating.
General > Icon and Connector Pane
Full Connector Pane—Checks that the connector pane is not full. VIs should have extra connector pane terminals available for future expansion.
VI Analyzer VIs Enhancements
The VIAn Get Tests VI includes a Test Descriptions output that returns an array of the test descriptions that correspond to the names in the Test Names output of the VI.
Note about Spell Check
For a listing of the copyrights, conditions, and disclaimers regarding the automatically generated inflection database, refer to the AGID_4.0_notice.pdf and AGID_4.0_license.pdf files in the Licenses directory on your VI Analyzer Toolkit installation media.
Known Issues
You can access the software and documentation known issues list online. Refer to the National Instruments Web site for an up-to-date list of known issues in the LabVIEW 2010 VI Analyzer toolkit.
