NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet 2.3 Readme
    August 2013
This file contains important information about NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet for Windows and LabVIEW Real-Time environment, including new features and changes, the installation and upgrade issues, compatibility issues, and a partial list of bug fixes.
Note   The NI-IndCom for DeviceNet 2.3 software requires the NI 9882 module with the upgraded firmware. When you upgrade your software to the 2.3 version, check the software version of the CD that shipped with your NI 9882 module.

If the version is not 2.3 or you are not sure of the version number, National Instruments recommends that you upgrade the firmware. Otherwise, when you use NI-IndCom for DeviceNet 2.3, firmware images corrupt or get mismatched.

The maximum number of devices you can connect to a DeviceNet interface depends on the electrical characteristics of the devices on the network. If all of the devices on the network meet the DeviceNet specifications, you may connect 64 devices to the network.
Caution  The NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software does not support the previous generation of the DeviceNet hardware products such as PCI-DNET, PCMCIA-DNET, and PXI-8461/D. Those products require an NI-DNET 1.x driver.
    Installation Instructions
Before installing the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software, log on as Administrator or as a user with Administrator privileges. The NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software setup program must have Administrator privileges because the program modifies the configuration registry of your system. Complete the following steps to install the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software:
    • Insert the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software CD into your CD-ROM drive. The installer launches if your CD-ROM drive plays data CDs automatically. If the installer does not launch automatically, navigate to the CD using Windows Explorer and launch the autorun.exe file from your NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software CD.
    • The installation wizard guides you through the necessary steps to install the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software. You can go back and change values where appropriate by clicking the Back button. You can exit the setup where appropriate by clicking the Cancel button.
    • When the installation is complete, click the Finish button.

Complete the following steps to install the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet software on a real-time target in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX):
    • Expand Remote Systems in the configuration tree and expand your real-time target.
    • Select the Software category. Click the Add/Remove Software icon on the toolbar to launch the LabVIEW Real-Time Software Wizard.
    • If the real-time target is a CompactRIO controller, select the Custom software installation option.
    • Select the NI-IndCom for DeviceNet item in the feature list and click the Next button.
    • Follow the remaining installation instructions until installation is complete.

    Compatibility with NI-DNET 1.x
NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet 2.1 or later is not an update for NI-DNET 1.x and the two products can be installed on the same system side by side. DeviceNet 2.1 or later provides NI-DNET 1.x compatible VIs, so the application using NI-DNET 1.x VIs can work with DeviceNet 2.1 or later on PCI-8532, PXI-8532 and NI 9882 with very limited code change.
Automating the Installation of NI Products
You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.
If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.
For more information, refer to the following KnowledgeBase articles:
    • For more information on silent installations of individual NI products, refer to KB 4CJDP38M, Automating the Installation of a Single Installer.
    • For more information on silent installations of suited NI products, such as NI Developer Suite, refer to KB 4GGGDQH0, Automating the Installation of a Suited Installer.
    • To determine what version of NI Installers your product contains, refer to KB 4CJDR18M, How Can I Determine the Type and Version of My National Instruments Installer?.
How to Use NI Software with Microsoft Windows 8
When you install National Instruments software on Microsoft Windows 8, you will notice a few additional tiles on the Start screen, including shortcuts to NI application software products such as NI LabVIEW, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), and the new NI Launcher.
    Using NI Launcher
NI Launcher helps you find and launch installed NI products. It provides you with a method of finding NI products similar to the Start menu in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To use NI Launcher, click the NI Launcher tile on the Start screen. NI Launcher launches the desktop and opens a menu containing a list of NI products. Click any NI product to launch it.
Note  MAX does not appear as a desktop shortcut when installed on Microsoft Windows 8. You can launch MAX either from the Start screen or from within NI Launcher.
    Pinning Frequently Used Applications
For convenience, you can pin your most-used NI applications, such as MAX, to either the Start screen or the Taskbar on the desktop, as necessary:
